RSC's 'Matilda' transfers to West End

LONDON -- The Royal Shakespeare Company's production of "Matilda -- The Musical" will transfer to the West End's Cambridge Theater from Oct. 18. A critical and SRO hit at its original 2010 Stratford-upon-Avon run, the tuner is adapted from Roald Dahl's children's story by playwright Dennis Kelly, with music and lyrics by Australian comedian and musician Tim Minchin. The production is helmed by Tony-winner Matthew Warchus ("The God of Carnage," "The Norman Conquests") and features choreography by Peter Darling ("Billy Elliot.") The show is produced in the West End by the Royal Shakespeare Company with Andre Ptaszynski as executive producer with an initial booking period until Feb. 12, 2012. The show will replace the long-running "Chicago" produced by Barry and Fran Weissler that has been running in London since November 1997, transferring to the Cambridge in April 2006. According to a spokesperson for the production, "Chicago at the Cambridge Theater will end on 27 August 2011. However, we are hopeful that 'Chicago's' record-breaking 14-year run in the West End will continue. Further details along with new casting for the show will be announced shortly."
