(AP) ? President Barack Obama sought Tuesday to recapture some of the bipartisan appeal that helped get him elected, while using the opportunity to assail GOP lawmakers for blocking his jobs bill.

Appearing in politically important North Carolina to promote his economic measures and his re-election, Obama promised he would work with GOP lawmakers on any serious plan they put forward to help get Americans back to work.

"I'm not the Democratic president or the Republican president. I'm the president," Obama said as the supportive crowd at a community college near Greensboro rose to its feet. The comment echoed Obama's 2008 campaign trail refrain about America being the "United States" and not simply a collection of red states and blue states.

Bipartisan rhetoric aside, Obama has had few discussions with any Republicans about the $447 billion jobs bill that Senate Republicans blocked last week. The bill is being broken into pieces so Congress can vote on its individual components.

"We got 100 percent 'no' from Republicans in the Senate," Obama said. "Now that doesn't make any sense."

He said the GOP jobs plan amounts to gutting environmental regulations, increasing domestic oil production, rolling back Obama-era reforms of the financial system and repealing the health care law enacted last year.

"Now that's a plan," Obama said, "but it's not a jobs plan."

The White House denies Obama is on a campaign trip. But immediately after his remarks, the president climbed aboard his sleek, million-dollar, Secret Service-approved black bus for a five-hour ride to Emporia, Va. The bus rolled to a stop a short time later at Reid's House, in Reidsville, N.C., and the diverse crowd cheered loudly as Obama entered the restaurant for lunch.

The president worked the room, stopping to chat with one local couple who said they'd been married 59 years and joking that he and his wife, Michelle, had 40 years to go to catch up. He even complimented a local resident who said he worked in the funeral business, exclaiming, "Fantastic, that's important work!"

Afterward, Obama encountered Laketta Hussain, who was among a group waiting outside and was using a very old cell phone or a cordless phone to talk to her grandmother. Obama took the phone and spoke for a few minutes. "I'm doing good," he said, "except your granddaughter needs a new cell phone."

Obama is on the second day of a three-day tour through North Carolina and Virginia that is giving him a chance to sit back, admire the colorful fall foliage and bask in some small-town Southern hospitality.

"There's just something about North Carolina," he said Tuesday. "People are just gracious and kind. Even the folks who don't vote for me are nice to me." He recalled stopping for barbecue, sweet tea and hush puppies and playfully admonished the audience not to tell his health-conscious wife what he's been eating.

The stated purpose of the trip was to continue selling the jobs bill. But Obama is also selling himself, trying to pump up voters whose enthusiasm may have waned. That's particularly important in North Carolina, a state he wrested from Republicans in 2008 but that could slip from his grasp next November.

To try to recapture some of his electoral appeal, Obama turned to campaign staples: barbecue, babies and barrels of candy.

Obama spent more than four hours Monday driving through the Blue Ridge Mountains, which were bright with red and orange fall leaves. He stopped in Marion, population 8,075, for lunch at Countryside Barbeque. He ordered at the counter ? the barbecue platter and sweet tea ? then spent more than half an hour shaking hands and having his picture taken with the lunchtime crowd.

The tech-savvy president even helped one woman figure out how to take a photo on her smartphone.

Obama had a close encounter with one baby boy: "I think you got some biscuit on me," he said as he handed the child back to his mother.

And he made personal appeals for his economic policies, telling one table of local businessmen about his call for $50 billion more in new infrastructure spending. He said, "We're going to have to do it eventually, so why not do it now?"

Obama's unscheduled stops aren't wholly impromptu. White House staffers typically scope out areas in advance and Secret Service officers arrive well ahead of the president.

But the stops are about as spontaneous as it gets for the president, and they afford him the freedom of personal, retail politics that's often missing in the highly scripted White House.

Obama's bus, which he said was "decked out pretty good," passed crowds of people lined up on the sidewalks of small towns and residents sitting on lawn chairs in their front yards. A group of schoolchildren gathered outside their classrooms, waving small American flags. A man pulled his car to the side of the road and saluted as the commander in chief sped by.

One woman held a sign reading "We believe. We voted. Now What?" That message underscored the challenge Obama faces as he seeks to rally his supporters ahead of the 2012 election.

Key to Obama's 2008 success in North Carolina was his campaign's ability to boost voter turnout among young people. And there were plenty of them in Boone, home to Appalachian State University, when Obama stopped Monday at Mast General Store.

The store was filled with barrels of candy, which Obama started grabbing by the handful ? to help the White House prepare for Halloween, he said.

Vitamin E raises risk of prostate cancer, study finds ? Health ...

Large daily doses of vitamin E, long touted as a virtual wonder drug that could protect against cancer, heart disease, dementia and other ailments, increase the risk for prostate cancer among middle-aged men, according to a large federal study released Tuesday.

The analysis of data from more than 35,000 healthy men concluded that those who took vitamin E every day at the relatively large dose levels commonly sold in drug, grocery and health food stores were 17 percent more likely to develop prostate cancer.

?You really have to question now how taking vitamin E will help someone,? said Eric Klein, a Cleveland Clinic prostate cancer expert who led what had been hoped to be a cancer-prevention study. ?Not only is it unlikely to help them, it apparently could hurt them.?

The findings, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, are the latest in a series of carefully designed experiments that have found that vitamins and other dietary supplements are useless or possibly dangerous. On Monday, the Archives of Internal Medicine published a paper that concluded that older women might have a higher overall mortality rate if they take multivitamins, folic acid, iron, magnesium, copper or zinc.

?Just because it?s ?only a vitamin? or ?it?s natural,? we assume it must be safe. But over and over again, we see that?s not necessarily the case,? said Howard Parnes of the National Cancer Institute, which funded the prostate cancer study. ?Not only isn?t it the fountain of youth that some people said, it can be harmful.?

About half of U.S. adults regularly take some kind of supplement, according to the latest federal data. Americans spend more than $28 billion a year on vitamins, minerals and other substances that companies claim can reduce the risk for cancer, heart attacks, strokes, diabetes and Alzheimer?s disease, among others, including about $340 million alone in 2010 for vitamin E, according to the Nutrition Business Journal.

Beta carotene might help slow a common form of blindness known as macular degeneration. But virtually every other large, rigorous attempt to verify the benefits of a dietary supplement has failed, and in some cases produced evidence of harm.

The National Institutes of Health launched a $119 million project to study prostate cancer in 2001 after laboratory studies and some clinical data indicated that the anti-oxidant vitamin E and selenium might protect against prostate cancer, the second most common cancer and cancer killer in men.

The study followed more than 35,533 men ages 50 or older at 427 sites in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico. The men were divided into four groups who took daily doses of 400 international units of vitamin E and 200 micrograms of selenium; vitamin E and a placebo that looked like selenium; selenium and a placebo that looked like vitamin E; or two placebos.

An independent panel monitoring the experiment halted it in 2008 when it became clear there was no benefit and indications emerged the supplements might be increasing the risk for prostate cancer and diabetes.

The new analysis, which is based on additional data collected since the trial was halted, found the diabetes risk disappeared but the prostate cancer risk reached statistical significance. There were 620 cases of prostate cancer among the men taking vitamin E alone, compared with 555 among those taking selenium and vitamin E, 575 among those taking selenium and 529 among men taking a placebo. Based on the findings, the researchers calculated that for every 1,000 men taking vitamin E alone, about 76 developed prostate cancer compared with 65 taking the placebo.

?The public and consumer tend to believe vitamins are innocuous substances and you can take them with impunity,? Klein said. ?Clearly that is not the case.?

Researchers are unclear how vitamin E would increase the risk for prostate cancer but are exploring several theories, in part by analyzing blood and other samples collected from the participants.

?There is speculation that maybe at very high doses antioxidants become pro-oxidants,? the NCI?s Parnes said. ?Another idea is that when you have very high doses of one nutrient there can be negative effects on others. Everything is a balance in biology. But we really don?t know.?

Several other studies are underway to examine possible benefits of other vitamins, including one testing vitamin D and fish oil to reduce the risk for heart disease and cancer.

Some scientists and the dietary supplement industry questioned the vitamin E findings, saying the new study and previous ones were flawed for trying to evaluate individual vitamins alone, noting the combination of vitamin E and selenium did not prove risky.

?This reinforces the theory that vitamins work synergistically and that drug-like trials of nutrients, when used in isolation from other nutrients, may not be the most appropriate way to study them,? said Duffy MacKay, vice president, scientific and regulatory affairs at the Council for Responsible Nutrition, an industry group.

Parnes, Klein and others stressed that there is plenty of evidence that consuming a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, which contain large amounts of vitamins and other nutrients that have antioxidant and other properties, is healthy.

?Bottom line, eat your vegetables and be active,? wrote Benjamin Caballero, director of the Center for Human Nutrition at Johns Hopkins University, in an e-mail. ?You cannot get those health benefits from any pill created by man.?

3 Core Activities for a Small Business Marketing Plan | 48 Days ...

?

Small Business Marketing Plan
A Small Business Marketing Plan Helps to Leverage All Your Assets & Opportunities

In case you didn?t know? this is Home-Based Business Week. If you want to take ground, one of the greatest places to start is with a small business marketing plan. Running a successful business takes more than a notion. While working at home has several perks, but there are multiple pitfalls to avoid. I wanted to share a few things that help me to stay focused and productive.

In addition, this is International Strategic Planning Month. I?m especially pumped about strategic planning month because I know it?s the foundation for long-term success. In my years of selling websites and pay-per-click advertising for other companies, one of the most common shortfalls of local business owners was not creating and working from a plan.

If you?re like me, you like planning and strategizing. You have an analytical mind and don?t mind working through all the details.

However, if you?re strong in execution? you may find yourself getting frustrated when it comes to creating a plan. The challenge of not having a plan can be crippling.?I find that nothing helps me focus and increase daily productivity like taking time to plan out goals, objectives, and a strategy to make things happen. Without a strategic approach, I tend to get bogged down in the tyranny of the urgent. Phone calls, checking and responding to email, and interruptions of all kinds throw me off track if I haven?t laid out a clear plan of action.

Here?s a very simple?template for developing an effective marketing plan. I like to call them marketing blueprints.

Since the essence of business comes down to getting and keeping customers, creating an up-to-date marketing blueprint ought to be your top priority.

  1. Lead Generation
  2. Setting Appointment
  3. Closing Sales

No matter what industry you?re in, those three activities must go on in some shape, fashion, or form. Each and every business must have a steady flow of new leads where prospective buyers are gaining awareness and indicating interest in your products or services. Once they indicate?interest, you?ve got to get in front of them to make a presentation. Your sales presentation can take place via phone, face-to-face, through direct mail, or online. Webinar sales?presentations have taken off in the last 24-36 months.

Obviously, the objective of a sales presentation is to close a sale. One of the ways you can close more sales is to increase the number of prospects you see on a regular basis. The strength of a small business marketing plan comes from tracking your numbers. This can be tough for first year or newbie business owner because there?s no frame of reference. However, once you develop a baseline, you can identify how many leads it takes for you to set one appointment. You?ll also know how many ?qualified??appointments you have to go on to close one sale.

If you?ll identify what your core sales numbers are, your small business marketing plan will become an invaluable tool. When I say core sales numbers, I?m referring to these:

  • How many leads come into your business on a weekly or monthly basis?
  • What the concersion rate of leads to customers, clients, or patients?
  • How much does your first-time customer, client, or patient spend with you on average?

Having answers to those questions alone can jump-start your business. When I get that information from a client, I know exactly where they need to focus their time and budget to get maximum gain in minimum time.

Attempting to create a small business marketing plan without that information is the hardest part of the process. However, it must be done in order to minimize losses and compete in this new economy. People running a home-based or small business sometimes?shortcut this process because they?re juggling so many responsibilities.

While Steve Jobs became an icon, he started working from home. You owe it to yourself to value your vision by taking the (uncommon) steps necessary to prepare for success.

Let me hear from you. Do you have a small business marketing plan? Is it up to date? If not, why?

Ask me your question and I?ll answer. What?s your single biggest question about developing an effective small business marketing plan?

(AP) ? Kenyans on Saturday bade farewell to the first African woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize in a colorful state funeral marked with prayers, praises and tree planting.

Thousands of Kenyans, including President Mwai Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga, amassed at a landmark park in Kenya's capital, Nairobi, to attend prayers held for the late Wangari Maathai.

Maathai, who won the Nobel in 2004 for her work in conservation and women's rights, resisted a government plan to build a complex at Uhuru Park, where the funeral was taking place Saturday.

"Wangari's legacy goes beyond Kenya ? all over the world," said Odinga. "We have lost a dedicated selfless Kenyan patriot," and her work will continue to inspire the rest of the world.

Rev. Phyliss Ochillo who prayed for Maathai Saturday said the laureate was concerned about the environment when he visited her in hospital only a day before her death.

"She did not respond to anything but when I talked about the environment that's when she responded," Ochillo said.

Maathai was seen as a threat to the rich and powerful. She was beaten, arrested and vilified for the simple act of planting a tree, a natural wonder she believed could reduce poverty and conflict.

Maathai, best known as the Tree Mother of Africa, believed that a healthy environment helped improve lives by providing clean water and firewood for cooking, thereby decreasing conflict. The Kenyan organization she founded planted 30 million trees in hopes of improving the chances for peace, a triumph for nature that inspired the U.N. to launch a worldwide campaign that resulted in 11 billion trees planted.

Maathai died late last month after a long battle with cancer. She was 71.

"The best way we can honor her is to carry on the great work she started especially in the fields of environmental conservation, social justice, human rights and democracy," President Kibaki said.

Maathai asked to be cremated because burying her in a wooden coffin would mean that a tree was cut, even though cremation defies Kenya's tradition of a burial. The casket carrying her body to be cremated Saturday was bamboo-framed, made of water hyacinth and papyrus reeds and draped with a Kenyan flag.

Although the family announced days earlier that the cremation would be private, thousands of Kenyans followed the ceremony up to the gate of the crematorium to try and catch a glimpse of the moments before she was reduced to ashes. But hundreds of police kept guard and pushed the crowd back from getting too close.

More than 5,000 tree seedlings are expected to be planted in her honor Saturday.

Maathai was the first African woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. But on Friday three champions of women's rights in Africa and the Middle East were also awarded the prize.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee split the prize between Tawakkul Karman, a leader of anti-government protests in Yemen; Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, the first woman to win a free presidential election in Africa; and Leymah Gbowee of Liberia, who campaigned against the use of rape as a weapon in her country's brutal civil war.

Maathai said during her 2004 Peace Prize acceptance speech that the inspiration for her life's work came from her childhood experiences in rural Kenya. There she witnessed forests being cleared and replaced by commercial plantations, which destroyed biodiversity and the capacity of forests to conserve water.

After Kenya's former President Daniel arap Moi left government, Maathai served as an assistant minister for the environment and natural resources ministry.

Although the tree-planting campaign launched by her group, the Green Belt Movement, did not initially address the issues of peace and democracy, Maathai said it became clear over time that responsible governance of the environment was not possible without democracy.

Maathai's work was quickly recognized by groups and governments the world over, winning awards, accolades and partnerships with powerful organizations.

Maathai was the first woman to earn a doctorate in East Africa ? in 1971 from the University of Nairobi, where she later was an associate professor in the department of veterinary anatomy. She previously earned degrees from Mount St. Scholastica College ? now Benedictine College ? in Atchison, Kansas, and the University of Pittsburgh.

Maathai is survived by three children.

Starting A Network Marketing Business

Article by Obinna Heche

When thinking of starting a network marketing business, you will need a business plan just as any other type of business if you hope to make it successful. It is more than the often believed three part strategy of starting a business, get rich, retire young. While that may happen one in 100,000 times, you will have to be extremely lucky to see it happen to you.

To begin to create a marketing strategy, you will need to decide on the type of business, or businesses, you hope to market as well as the target market you hope to hit. Knowing the product or service is a great first step in establishing yourself as a knowledgeable force on your way to success.

Write out your plan and what position you want to find yourself in the short and long term as well as how you plan to reach those goals. Since many network marketing efforts involve affiliate marketing you will need to discover which companies will accept pay for performance advertising and how to best leverage yourself as a leader in the market. You will also want to plan on whom to recruit to help you with your efforts.

Plan to grow your business slowly and avoid the allure of quick profits because chances are they will not materialize anyway and it reduces the chance of failure. As your home base network marketing company grows, mark off the goals you set as you reach them and when you see yourself growing faster than planned, adjust your goals to a level that will have you reaching higher than you initially thought was possible.

Get involved in the affiliate marketing program of your choice that offers the best method of reaching higher goals and then teach others how you have accomplished all that you have, This will help ensure their success as well as increasing your future income from their efforts as well as your own and plan to recruit others into your business. When they have been firmly trained and are working successfully, work with them to recruit additional people to help them more money, as well as improving your own standard of living.

You can also use your proven network marketing strategy to create additional streams of income to better diversify your income in case something should happen to the first. You will never be without an income source as long as you maintain diversity in your business.

Network marketing has no large capital investment, no quotas on production and you are not limited to a certain country. There are also tax advantages to a home based business, not to mention the additional income that everyone can find useful.

Rental Bonds Make It More Secure

???

Buying, selling and leasing out commercial or residential properties involve a number of procedures and concerns for all those participating in the deal. There are so many considerations the landlord makes when handling over the property to tenants. The first major concern is whether the tenant will make the rental payments on time or not. Secondly, whether the tenant will take good care of the property or not. There are other important things such as pool repairs, lawn maintenance and handling the normal wear and tear. Rental bonds provide good protection to landlords against all major issues related with leasing.

Landlords seek security from rental bonds which protect them from potential losses brought about by property damages and unpaid rental charges. Although tenants are not compelled to do so, a lot of landlords make them pay rental bonds as the lease period commences. It is the duty of a property manager to perform all the necessary actions needed for document preparations upon the arrangement of rental bonds. These professionals are well-versed in the unique laws and regulations of every region, and are thus capable of providing reliable advice and assistance to landlords.

Once you (or your property manager) obtain the rental bond funds, they are required to be handed over to the Residential Tenancies Authority, or RTA, within 10 days of collection. A bond lodgment document is also sent along with the funds, completely filled and signed by the tenant. The RTA will process the application and send confirmation to you and your tenant. Upon maturity of the lease, the property shall be checked for any possible damages other than the normal wear and tear, as well as for any payments which are yet to be received. Upon complete satisfaction, the funds will be returned to the tenant by the RTA.

When preparing the terms of lease, rental bond charges are to be carefully calculated. In Queensland, if the rental payment is equal to or less than $700 per week, rental bond amount has to be equivalent to four weeks' worth. For rents more than $700 per week, there is no maximum. If the tenant finds it difficult to arrange for the lump sum funds, installments at times can be arranged.

Rental bond is essentially a financial security provided to the landlord at the time of leasing to ensure there are no issues regarding collection of rents on time and the property is kept safe and free from damages. Landlords have to consider a number of factors before leasing out their properties, such as the ongoing property maintenance, and sound risk management to get the maximum returns.

Why Sarah Palin isn't running for president: 5 theories (The Week)

New York ? Mama Grizzly makes it official ? ending a years-long political parlor game. Did the Chris Christie factor make her realize she just couldn't win?

Sarah Palin has?officially closed the door on a 2012 White House run, telling supporters Wednesday that her family comes first, and that she feels she can better serve the conservative cause without chasing the "title" of president. With New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie also formally opting out of the race this week, Palin's announcement leaves the GOP slate of candidates pretty set in stone. After months, if not years, of hinting she might run for president, why did Alaska's former governor ultimately decide to sit out this year? Here, five theories:

1. Palin knew she couldn't win
President Obama is beating Palin in a hypothetical match-up in "oh, every major poll," by an average of 12.8 points, says Joe Garofoli in the San Francisco Chronicle. And "Palin can read poll numbers as well as any politician," says B. Daniel Blatt at?Gay Patriot. Heck, in one poll, three-quarters of Republicans didn't want her to run.

2. Christie sunk her chances
If Palin had run, she might have become the most credible conservative alternative to Mitt Romney,?says Allahpundit at?Hot Air. That's largely because fellow conservative Herman Cain won't last, and Texas Gov. Rick Perry is fading fast. But Palin would have had a hard time beating the deep-pocketed Romney in a two-way race. "Once Christie decided not to get in and split the centrist vote with Romney, there was no obvious path for her (which may explain the timing of her announcement today)."

3. Palin really does think she'll be more influential out of the race
In retrospect, it's pretty clear that Palin has long been campaigning to be "Queen of the Tea Party," not president of the United States, says Molly Ball at?The Atlantic. Just look at the evidence: Widely covered tours with the Tea Party Express; the "hagiographic movie, The Undefeated, that cast her in that royal mother role"; and her repeated criticisms "of the entire political establishment," including some Republicans. Sitting out the race lets Palin "remain a kingmaker," says Gay Patriot's Blatt. "Her endorsement could well help decide the contest."

4. She doesn't want the pay cut
Joining the race would have meant losing her $1 million annual contract with Fox News, says Joe Gandelman at?The Moderate Voice, a factor that surely figured into her decision. Then again, says The Atlantic's Ball, it's not clear she'll even "continue to be employed by Fox News" after making her announcement elsewhere (on an ABC affiliated radio station), a "potentially telling snub."

5. Palin is saving her fire for 2014, or 2016, or...
"In true Palin form, her announcement does leave the door open for plenty of speculation," says Joe Coscarelli at?New York. "Notice how she makes it clear that she 'will not be seeking the 2012 GOP nomination,'" saying nothing about 2016. It's true,?says Hot Air's Allahpundit, that Palin is just "47 years old, fully 25 years younger than McCain was when he was nominated three years ago." There's clearly "no rush." If she challenged Sen. Mark Begich (D-Alaska) in 2014 and won, that "would be a huge first step back towards national viability down the road." Hey, if she backs the winning Republican presidential candidate this year,?says Dan Riehl in?Riehl World View, she might even wind up?as energy secretary.

Have You Included Your Pet in Your Disaster Preparedness ...

Whether an emergency keeps you away from home for a day, or a week or more, you?ll need essential supplies and an emergency plan for your pets and large animals.

Have a Plan
Know where you and your pets will be going after an emergency. Have at least two pre-planned boarding locations for your animals in case you are sick, injured or must evacuate during a disaster. These facilities should be located away from your home and far apart from each other to reduce the likelihood that they will be affected by the disaster.

Grab-and-Go Kits for Your Small Pets
Assemble emergency kits for your pets and place them in a spot where they are handy to grab. Duffel bags, covered trash containers, or buckets with securely fitting lids make great containers for your pet?s kit. Items to include are:

? Wire cage or carrier with good air circulation along with a cover for sun, rain, ash, etc.
? Sturdy leashes, harnesses and collars with a ground mounting device for tying up pets temporarily
? Food and water for several days
? Your pet?s medications
? Pet beds and toys
? Current photos of you with your pets in case you are separated
? Name and contact information of your veterinarian

Be sure that all dogs, cats and small pets are always wearing collars with securely fastened identification. Identification microchips are highly recommended for all pets.

Horses and Large Animals
Emergency preparedness is important for all animals, but preparedness for horses and other large animals is critical because of their size and special transportation needs.

Horses and large animals should be evacuated as soon as an evacuation warning is issued. Do not wait for an evacuation order. If you?re unprepared or wait until the last minute, you may need to leave your animals behind.

Network with your neighbors prior to an emergency. Work together with those who do not have horse trailers or who may be away during an emergency.

Risks after a Disaster
After the crisis has passed, it may be some time before you can return to your home. Even if your house is intact and you are allowed to return, the area may not be safe for your pets.

Risks to animals after a disaster include:
? Cut paws or feet
? Burns if there has been a fire
? Eating or inhaling toxic substances or residues
? Escaping because of downed fences or other damage
? Loss of shelter and shade
? Lack of water, power, or other services

Keep in mind that when animals return to a changed landscape, they will be upset, disoriented, and easily stressed. Try to be calm and follow normal routines whenever possible.

Keeping Your Small Business Thriving in Tough Times | Make ...

This post has been read 156 times.

The recent economic recession is one of the most serious financial blows our world economy has taken in the last several decades. Its influence ranges from finance to real estate to online businesses to small businesses.

While just about everyone?s affected, there are still many businesses that are thriving. How can you make sure you still do well in these tough economic times?

Here are a few tips.

Offer a Cost-Saving Option

When faced with choosing between either a cheaper option or a higher value option, many consumers today would choose to go with the cheaper option.

Instead of just selling your normal product line, consider creating a ?lite? version for customers who still want to use your product but don?t want to spend all the money.

Starbucks is selling their coffee in packets instead of just ground beans for a fraction of the price. Cable companies are offering fewer channels. So on and so forth.

How can you offer cost-saving offers for your customers?

Go International

Have you considered shipping internationally or servicing international customers?

Hardest hit in the recent recession are the United States and the European Union. However, many Western countries like Australia, Canada and New Zealand still have very strong economies. In fact, all three countries have higher than USD valuations on their currencies at the time of this writing.

If your business is online, it can be as simple as changing your targeting, PPC and SEO techniques to target these countries. If you ship physical products, you?ll need to explore the various laws and regulations surrounding shipping products internationally.

Consider Part-Time Workers and Outsourcers

Try to cut back on full-time employees. Try to cut full-time employees to part time; if possible switch to outsourcers.

Downsizing isn?t easy for anyone. There?s the financial blow, the blow to pride and most importantly the pain we know we?re causing to the people being laid off.

Unfortunately, if the numbers just can?t justify having someone on full time, the only right move is to cut spending.

Growing Your Business Despite Tough Times

Though tough economic times do mean customers are spending less money, it also means your competition is likely facing the same issues.

You?ll have less competitors and weaker competition. More likely than not you won?t have new competitors opening new businesses.

In other words, you actually have a very unique opportunity. Your competition is weak; and if you can find some way to differentiate yourself you may be able to corner the market.

Try to find some sort of differentiating factor about your product or service that you can put on the market.

The recession isn?t an excuse to give up. Instead, it should be a rallying call. Treat it like a window of opportunity; as it very often can be just that.

Women with PCOS have family heart disease link, study suggests

ScienceDaily (Oct. 4, 2011) ? A new study from the University of Adelaide shows the parents of women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) are more likely to have some form of cardiovascular disease.

PCOS is a hormonal disorder affecting about 10% of women of reproductive age. It is one of the most common endocrine disorders in women and a leading cause of infertility.

The study shows mothers of women with PCOS are more likely to have any form of cardiovascular disease, and almost twice as likely to have high blood pressure, than mothers of other women.

Fathers of women with PCOS are more than twice as likely to have heart disease, and more than four times as likely to have a stroke, than fathers of other women.

The study involved taking family medical histories from more than 700 women born at Adelaide's Queen Elizabeth Hospital between 1973-1975.

The results of the study will be published October 5 in the online journal PLoS ONE.

"Our results show there is a strong link between cardiovascular disease in both mother and father and the risk of polycystic ovary syndrome in their daughters," says the lead author of the study, Associate Professor Michael Davies from the University of Adelaide's Robinson Institute.

"It suggests that PCOS may be the consequence of a family susceptibility to chronic disease. Further research into the association between the child and parent is therefore needed," he says.

"In Australia alone, about 500,000 women are affected by PCOS. While it is a leading cause of infertility, PCOS also carries with it a wide range of other, serious health complications.

"By further understanding the link between PCOS and other family medical conditions, we might be able to diagnose and treat all of these illnesses at an earlier stage."

US auto sales up in September on big trucks (AP)

DETROIT ? U.S. buyers shrugged off economic worries and snapped up SUVs and pickups last month, surprising the auto industry and raising hopes that a bumpy year will end on a high note.

Big trucks typically sell when the housing market and construction industry are strong, gas prices are low and consumer confidence is high. None of those was true in September. The economy remains weak, confidence is shaky and a gallon of gas prices cost nearly $1 per more than in September 2010.

But other factors boosted truck sales. Small businesses must eventually replace aging fleets of work trucks, and auto companies offered some good deals to clear out 2011 model trucks. They also stepped up their marketing. And consumers are learning to live with economic uncertainty.

"We see consumers being more comfortable with buying cars in a continuously volatile environment," said Jesse Toprak, vice president of industry trends and insights for the car pricing site TrueCar.com. "Traditionally, they would have postponed making the purchase decision."

U.S. vehicle sales rose 10 percent from last September, according to Autodata Corp. September saw the fastest sales pace since April, and automakers expect that pace to stay steady for the rest of this year.

Nearly 54 percent of vehicles sold were trucks and SUVs, the highest percentage this year. That's good news for automakers, which make much bigger profits on trucks and SUVs. Truck sales at General Motors Co., Chrysler Group LLC and Ford Motor Co. grew in the double digits, outpacing cars. Even Honda Motor Co., which normally gets the bulk of its sales from cars, sold 3,000 more trucks than cars.

A shortage of cars is another reason truck and SUV sales were strong. Analysts had expected more Japanese cars to fill showrooms after months of shortages related to March's earthquake and tsunami.

But Honda and Toyota continued to struggle with product shortages. Toyota's September sales were down 17.5 percent, while Honda's fell 8 percent.

Truckloads of new Honda vehicles arrived at dealerships last week, and Toyota Motor Corp.'s new Camry sedan recently went on sale, but they were too late in both cases to give September totals a significant boost.

Bob Carter, Toyota's U.S. sales chief, said October should be a turning point. With all of its plants now running, the automaker expects its Toyota division to post its first year-over-year sales increase since April and it expects to post sales increases through the fourth quarter and beyond.

Many buyers were replacing trucks in September because they had to. The average truck on the road is now around 10.1 years old, according to R.L. Polk and Associates.

"A commercial owner cannot afford to have their vehicle out of service," said Don Johnson, GM's vice president of U.S. sales.

Promotions also helped. GM was offering zero-percent financing for 60 months and $1,000 cash on the 2011 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 pickup. But Edmunds.com said incentive spending was only up 3 percent from August, to an average of $2,453 per vehicle, and was actually down from last September.

Paul Ballew, a former GM chief economist who now works for Nationwide Insurance, said deals will probably get more generous in the last part of this year. Japanese automakers will have to offer rebates and other incentives to get back market share lost to GM, Hyundai Motor Co. and other competitors. Detroit automakers will probably offer discounts on trucks because of high inventories, he said.

"It'll probably be a pretty good time to buy a vehicle," he said. "Consumers have proved they will respond selectively when prodded."

Automakers don't expect the pace of sales to slow for the rest of the year. GM stuck with its forecast for full-year sales of around 12.8 million cars and trucks, which would be up 10 percent from last year.

But some analysts say September's boost will be short-lived because economic worries could still dampen sales. Edmunds.com last week reduced its full-year sales forecast from 12.9 million vehicles to 12.6 million vehicles.

GM's September sales rose 20 percent, led by a 34 percent rise in sales of full-size pickups and SUVs. Chrysler's sales rose 27 percent, while Ford's were up 9 percent.

Other automakers reporting sales Monday included:

? Nissan Motor Co., with sales up almost 29 percent. The company's cars led the way with sales of the Altima midsize sedan, Sentra compact, Versa subcompact and Maxima large sedan up a combined 32 percent for the month.

? Hyundai Motor Co., which said sales rose 12 percent. Sales of the Elantra small car rose 43 percent, while sales of the Santa Fe crossover rose 67 percent.

? Volkswagen AG, with sales up 37 percent on the strength of the new Jetta and Passat sedans.

? Kia Motors America, with sales up 18.4 percent.

? The BMW Group, with sales up 11.4 percent

? Subaru of America Inc., which saw its sales fall 2.3 percent as it struggled with continuing inventory issues due to the March earthquake and tsunami in Japan.
