Really? Breathing Exercises Can Relieve Asthma - NYTimes.com

Really?

Anahad O?Connor tackles health myths.

THE FACTS

Breathing exercises are among the most popular alternative therapies for asthmatics. But do they work?

According to a recent report by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the answer depends on the technique. Some appear effective in reducing asthma severity, but there is little evidence to support others.

In the exhaustive, 219-page report, researchers examined 22 randomized studies of breathing techniques. Among the most common are hyperventilation-reduction techniques like the Buteyko method, which instructs asthmatics to breathe shallowly and slowly through the nose when short of breath. The report also looked at yoga breathing exercises and so-called inspiratory-muscle training, which involves exercises and devices that make inhaling more difficult in order to strengthen muscles.

The researchers found the most robust body of evidence supported hyperventilation-reduction breathing techniques, which achieved ?medium to large improvements in asthma symptoms and reductions in reliever medication use of approximately 1.5 to 2.5 puffs per day.?

Looking at inspiratory training approaches, the researchers could not find enough credible research to draw any firm conclusions. They did find some evidence for yoga exercises, which typically require deep breaths ? usually through the nose ? with extended exhalation. But most of the evidence came from studies in India, where yoga exercises are more intensive and frequent than in the United States.

Still, the authors said, ?Patients with asthma who are students of yoga and willing to undertake intensive training may find benefits of asthma-targeted practice with a trained yoga practitioner.?

THE BOTTOM LINE

Breathing exercises may help relieve asthma, though the efficacy varies.

Amazon Kindle (2012)

Last year, we awarded the entry-level Amazon Kindle our Editors' Choice for its excellent value, slim form factor, and robust ebook ecosystem. This year, Amazon introduced the higher-end Kindle Paperwhite, which got most of the press ink thanks to its new edge-lit lighting. However, the company also saw fit to release a modestly updated version of the base model, with a slightly improved screen and a lower ($69 direct) price. After testing it, we found that the new improvements help keep this little?ebook reader solidly in the lead among budget models, even if its lack of a touch screen is beginning to feel a bit dated.

Design and Display
This year's Amazon Kindle has the same form factor as before. It measures 6.5 by 4.5 by 0.34 inches (HWD) and weighs 5.98 ounces. You can now get one in black as well as the standard gray. And the new black version looks sharp. Both models have the same plastic bezel and soft touch back panel as before, and are quite comfortable to hold for long reading sessions.?In fact, you could argue it's easier to hold one of these than it is a touch screen version, since you can place your fingers on the screen without accidentally turning pages.?

For that task, duplicate sets of hardware page-turn buttons sit on the left and right edges of the Kindle's frame. The larger one moves forward one page, while the smaller one moves back one page. The buttons are a little tough to press at first, but once you get used to the positioning, they're quite responsive. Now that the Kindle has been out for a year in this form factor, reports have surfaced about the page turn buttons loosening up and eventually not working. I can confirm that the buttons on the model I purchased last November feel decidedly looser than the new loaner I'm reviewing, although they still work fine. It's just something to be aware of.

Beneath the screen is a raised, five-way control pad, bracketed by Back, Keyboard, Menu, and Home buttons. A Power button and micro USB charger port occupy the bottom panel. The package includes a white USB cable, but no AC adapter. Amazon sells a $9.99 AC adapter if you want one, along with a $34.99 leather case that looks nice but adds noticeable heft and thickness.

At 167ppi, the 6-inch, E Ink Pearl screen shares the same pixel density as the older model; it doesn't get the Kindle Paperwhite's sharper 212ppi screen, nor does it get touch capability. When placed next to last year's model, there's a slight but noticeable difference in contrast. The new version's fonts look ever so slightly darker and crisper. It's nothing you would notice without the side-by-side comparison, though.

Interface, Reading, and Kindle Store
To get started, plug the Kindle into a USB port on a computer to begin charging it, choose your interface language, and then log onto your Wi-Fi network. It's little places like this where you'll wish you had a touch screen, as moving the cursor from letter to letter to enter the network password is a little clumsy.

Once you download a few books and start reading, though, the Kindle offers an enjoyable experience. Page turns are just as fast as before thanks to the 800MHz processor, and as with last year's model, no longer flash the entire screen black each time. Amazon employs a caching mechanism that only flashes the page every six page turns. You get eight different font sizes, three line spacing settings, and a choice of three fonts: regular, condensed, and sans serif. You can make annotations and take notes, but without an on-screen keyboard, this is a novelty at best; if you think you might be doing that a lot, it's worth the extra cash to spring for the Kindle Paperwhite.

A few nits: The Home screen is still the same, boring one that lists your books, sorted by most recent, title, or author. You can create collections, but those collections stay on the device and can't be easily transferred to the iPhone app, for example, the way iTunes shares music playlists in the cloud. You also don't get the book cover view that the Kindle Paperwhite adopted this year; it's text only.?None of these are deal-breakers, though.

Amazon's Kindle Store is packed with Recommended and Top Book lists, so finding new things to read is a pleasure. You can even browse the store easily from the Kindle, which is a better shopping experience than you get on the Kobo Mini, despite that ebook reader's touch screen interface. Amazon makes apps for the iPhone, iPad, Android phones, Macs, and PCs, and syncs your book collections, last-read pages, and notes among all of them.

Other Features, Special Offers, and Conclusions
There's no 3G version, which is fine for an inexpensive ebook reader; the base Amazon Kindle supports 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi; there's no cellular radio here. You get 2GB of internal storage as before, with 1.25GB free for your books, which should be good for roughly 1,000 of them. As always, Amazon stores all of your purchases in the cloud, so you can retrieve them whenever you want, and also view them on other devices.

The Kindle supports Amazon's own Kindle format, plus TXT, PDF, MOBI, HTML, DOC, and DOCX files, but not ePub, which might limit your ability to borrow books from public libraries. There's no memory card slot either, so you can't expand storage or easily sideload books. If these features are important to you, have a look at the Barnes & Noble Nook Simple Touch, which adds ePub support and a memory card slot. Also missing: A headphone jack and audiobook support.

As with other Kindle products, there are two versions available. The $69 model comes with Special Offers, which appear on the home screen whenever it's locked, and also appear as small banner ads while browsing in the store. They don't appear during actual reading, although I still find it disconcerting to pick up the ebook reader and see a new ad each time. If you don't like the ads, you can either pay $20 to remove them, or you can buy a version without ads up front for $89. Note that while the base model with Special Offers receives a $10 price cut, from $79 to $69, the model without Special Offers is now $20 less expensive, down from $109 to $89, which is a welcome development.

The new $69 price keeps the Amazon Kindle competitive and easily worth the cash. The Kobo Mini costs $79, doesn't display ads, supports ePub files, has a memory card slot, and offers a touch screen. But the screen itself is an inch smaller, at just 5 inches, its sluggish page turns and slightly stubborn finger response are difficult to overlook, and its store isn't as fun to browse from the device. The Barnes & Noble Nook Simple Touch costs $99; it has a 6-inch touch screen and many of the same benefits as the Kobo Mini, but $30 is a fairly significant jump in price. Otherwise, your other options sail past the $100 mark, which puts you in an Amazon Kindle Paperwhite. For just $69, or $89 without ads, the base Amazon Kindle remains our favorite low-cost ebook reader.

Overcome the obstacles. Turn sales enablement to buyer ...

All businesses try to help their teams sell. Selling is, after all, the primary focus of most businesses. Some see selling as the endgame, others as one of the means to other corporate goals ? shareholder value for example. Selling is a dominant force in determining culture and operation.

Which has helped ?sales enablement? become a critical focus for marketing organisations.

But supporting sales isn?t push-button. At MTD spend quite a bit of time working out not just what to produce to support sales, but how to support them, the kind of sales teams we?re working with ? and what they need to be supported in. Businesses have a wide variety of channels they need supporting from us in:

  • Small in-house sales teams supporting remote sellers
  • Extended teams conducting sophisticated engagement ? needing lead gen, pipeline management etc
  • Increasing exploration of online sales models
  • Social and digital, CRM programming, digital body language analysis (seldom properly explored internally)

The businesses we work with all need support in some, or all, of these areas to have better conversations with any audiences, whether directly with consumers, with resellers, or other businesses.

So far so straightforward. But while we?re driving sales enablement and equipping sales teams, it?s easy to forget the other half of the equation. Buyer behaviour. The way people buy has changed fundamentally, driven by digital channels, smart technology and a culture of self-determination. All buyers, business and consumer, dislike being sold to. They want to choose freely, with absolute clarity, 24/7.

What does that mean in practice? First, it means (according to Harvard Business School) that traditional sales ? on which a lot of businesses focus 100% of sales enablement ? now amount to only 15% of the entire buying process. Second, it?s resulted in buyers wanting something different: challenge. Challenger sales, as we cited in a previous blog, are now far more effective than traditional ?relationship? selling ? 34% effective, according to Gartner, as against 9%. ?

It?s amazing that despite clear evidence that the nature of buyers and thus sales has changed, many businesses aren?t addressing their sales enablement processes.

We meet this need by making Sales Enablement part of a bigger story: Buyer Enablement. That means we do much more than give sales teams tools and help them with engagements (though we do that a great deal as well); we define the entire buyer journey, map the perfect channels and create the best content to engage them with, and work with everyone in their services ? in sales, customer service, marketing ? to help them do more. At the same time we create ways, through every tool, technology and channel, for buyers to discover, trust and buy from our clients, wherever and whoever they are.

This is sales enablement, for today?s bigger, faster world. A new way to overcome obstacles and succeed in a crowded, hard to penetrate market. By doing something most of the competition isn?t ? and looking beyond the normal.

So what?s the relevance for you? Well, as businesses look to streamline their sales and marketing organisations (whilst addressing the challenges presented by changing buyer behaviours) we believe that Buyer Enablement creates a more effective and efficient operation ? delivering greater relevance to your buyers and moving more potential buyers to your brand.

To discuss how MTD can support your business, get in touch here ? or reach out to us on Twitter @MTD_agency and #buyertobrand.?

SD?team looks for US pro record 41st straight win

Associated Press Sports

updated 9:53 p.m. ET Nov. 22, 2012

SAN DIEGO (AP) - The San Diego Sockers will set a U.S. professional team record if they win their 41st straight game Friday night.

The Sockers will face the Toros de Mexico at the former San Diego Sports Arena.

The Sockers beat the Arizona Storm last weekend to tie the record of 40 straight victories set by the Sioux Falls Storm of United Indoor Football from 2005-2008.

"It's huge for this team and our franchise," said midfielder Brian Farber, who leads the PASL with 16 points, with seven goals and nine assists, in three games. "We haven't lost since I've been here and we don't intend to lose anytime soon. We're going to come home in front of our fans on Friday and try to break the record. We want to keep this winning streak alive for a long time."

The Sockers haven't lost since Dec. 27, 2010, 9-8 in overtime to the California Cougars. The Sockers blew a 4-0 lead in the first quarter that game. The winning streak began two days later with a 7-5 victory against the San Diego Fusion.

"These guys are driven and very determined to win every time they take the field," general manager John Kentera said. "There's pressure to play for the Sockers. Everyone in the game of indoor soccer knows the Sockers are all about championships and wins. Our head coach (Phil Salvagio) still reminds the players of our last loss. We're proud to keep that tradition alive."

Former Sockers great Juli Veee will deliver the ceremonial first kick prior to Friday's opening kickoff. The 62-year-old Veee was part of seven Sockers championships with the indoor team from 1980 to 1988. Veee was the first soccer player inducted into the San Diego Hall of Champions and was part of the inaugural class of the Indoor Soccer Hall of Fame.

A mystery in Renaissance warrior's tomb

A noble-but-brutal Renaissance warrior who fell to a battle wound may not have died exactly as historians had believed, according to a new investigation of the man's bones.

Italian researchers opened the tomb of Giovanni dalle Bande Nere, or Giovanni of the Black Bands, this week to investigate the real cause of his death. Giovanni was born in 1598 into the wealthy and influential Medici family, a lineage that produced four Popes and two regent queens of France, among many other nobles. He worked as a mercenary military captain for Pope Leo X (one of the Medici family's Popes), and fought many a successful skirmish in his name. When Pope Leo X died in 1521, Giovanni altered his uniform to include black mourning bands, earning him his nickname.

Giovanni was wounded in battle in 1526; reportedly, his leg was amputated and he died several days later of infection. However, the new investigation of the Giovanni remains reveals that it was not his leg that was sawn off, but his foot. Nor is there any damage to the man's thigh, where the shot supposedly hit.

Giovanni's grave has been opened five times already, including an investigation in 1945. This confirmation of the man's actual wound has created a medical mystery.

"Giovanni was wounded in the right leg (maybe above the knee) but was amputee(d) (at the) foot," Marco Ferri, a spokesman for the Superintendent of Fine Arts of Florentine Museums, wrote in an email to LiveScience. "Why? The surgeon was not a good doctor or the news (that) reached us (is) not accurate."

Giovanni's bones rest with those of his wife, Maria Salviati, in two zinc boxes in the crypt of the Medici Chapels in Florence. The man's tibia and fibula, the bones of the lower leg, were found sawed off from the amputation. There was no damage to the femur (thigh bone). [ 10 Tales from the Crypt & Beyond ]

Preliminary measurements suggest that Giovanni was about 5 feet, 10 inches tall (178 centimeters). Researchers, led by paleopathologist Gino Fornaciari of the University of Pisa, also found a tubelike glass container with a rolled-up card inside that may bear an inscription. This container was not mentioned in reports of earlier investigations of the crypt.

Ferri said the team would further measure and analyze the bones before reburying them. The findings are preliminary and have yet to be published in a peer-reviewed journal.

Brio Classic Figure 8 Train Set from Schylling Toys Kids Product ...

?

A classic, all-wooden starter train set for children age 2 years old and up. The Brio Classic Figure 8 Train Set features a classic engine with two cars, wooden track that crosses at a bridge, wooden trees and a station, making this Brio set fun for young drivers!

Yes, the Brio Classic Figure 8 Train Set is designed for children age 2 and up?and yes, there are very few toys that you can hand over to a 2 year old and expect them to be able to use on their own?so Mom and Dad?be warned, you are going to have to participate in your child?s play on the young side of this recommended age spectrum. However, you?ll be amazed at just how quickly they?ll pick up on how to assemble and play with this train set. We found plenty of 3 year olds that were able to handle this set all on their own!

Like so many toys from Brio and Schylling, this classic train set is made of solid wood to last a lifetime. This is without question the kind of set that you would be able to box up and pass on to your grandkids when they are ready!

Take it apart, put it together and chug, chug, chug along! This set has all of the functionality a little boy or girl could ask for!

So?.let?s just say that this set isn?t on the inexpensive side. With a suggested retail price of $49.99 many of the parents in our group were hesitant to say they would pick this up for their own kids. Most felt that they would love it as a gift?but most weren?t comfortable shelling out $50 for a train set that wasn?t electric! Yes, we commented on just how long it would last?yet even with that some of our parents felt that when push came to shove they would opt for a less expensive plastic model.

Brio toys have that amazing classic feel?yet play as well as any modern iteration out there. In our book ? that speaks volumes about originality!

Bottom line we love everything about this train set other than the price. If you can handle the cost, you aren?t going to find a better starter train set anywhere. The pieces are easy to use, and absolutely well-made. Your child will love to play with the set too ? you?ll be amazed at just how often they are willing to sit there and assemble, disassemble and start again. The Brio Classic Figure 8 Set is throwback perfect for today?s kids!
