Pakistan force says no missing persons in custody

A Pakistani government paramilitary force blamed for the disappearance of dozens of people told the country's Supreme Court on Tuesday it had no missing persons in its custody.

The Supreme Court is investigating cases of missing people in the southwestern province of Baluchistan, where the military has been accused of rights violations in its bid to put down a separatist insurgency.

Pakistan's chief justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry on July 13 ordered the paramilitary Frontier Corps (FC) commander Major General Obaidullah Khattak to produce 16 missing people.

The force in a written statement submitted at the court on Tuesday said it had conducted "internal inquiries" and found the group of missing people "was not held in the custody of FC".

It said in many cases insurgents dressed in FC uniforms committed "high profile acts of terrorism and heinous crimes... thus bringing (a) bad name to this federal organisation".

Chaudhry said he was not satisfied with the FC's reply and directed the paramilitary and civilian officials to appear again before the court on Wednesday.

"There is apparent failure of the executive machinery to control law and order," Chaudhry said.

It is the latest effort from the Supreme Court aimed at bringing Pakistan's powerful military and intelligence agencies to book over mass arrests of alleged terror suspects, many of whom are never seen again.

Chaudhry and two other judges are also hearing a case involving the alleged abduction of 32 people, two of whom were killed, in the Totak Khuzdar district of Baluchistan in February last year. Fourteen were released by security forces.

Baluchistan is one of the most deprived areas of Pakistan. Rights activists have accused the military of mass arrests and extrajudicial executions in its bid to put down a separatist insurgency that erupted in 2004.

In February, seven men allegedly held by intelligence services appeared before the Supreme Court in Islamabad, more than a year and a half after being detained in connection with terror attacks.

It was an unprecedented development that challenged perceptions that the feared Inter-Services Intelligence agency operates above the law.

Demand For The Next iPhone Is At An - Business Insider

The demand for Apple's next iPhone is at an "unprecedented level," according to a new survey from ChangeWave.

The market research firm surveyed more than 4,000 consumers in mid-June and found that 14% said they were very likely to buy the next iPhone and 17% said they were somewhat likely to buy it. In other words, nearly a third of consumers say they will likely buy the fifth generation iPhone.

ChangeWave notes that the demand for the next generation iPhone is "strikingly higher than we've seen for any previous iPhone model." Indeed, a similar survey conducted by the firm last year found that 21.5% of consumers were very likely or somewhat likely to buy the iPhone 4s, well below the demand this year.

A separate survey from Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster also found there is enough demand for the next iPhone to make it Apple's best selling phone yet.

Bob Bridge named grand marshal of River Days parade

IKEA Renton River Days is almost here and ushering in the parade this year will be local Renton businessman Bob Bridge, who will be the grand marshal.

This year's parade starts at 10 a.m. July 28 and marches down South Third Street in downtown Renton.Bridge, who used to own a car dealership in Renton for many years, was chosen for his commitment to the community.

?Bob has done so much for Renton," said Tammy Kaiser, the River Days volunteer parade chair in a press release. "He is truly a caring and devoted member of the community. Honoring him as grand marshal of the parade is one small way we can show our appreciation for his continued commitment.?

Bridge is celebrated for his philanthropic efforts and support to different causes in Renton, for example education.He established the Reading Buddies program, where fifth-graders read and tutor first and second-grade students.?It came from an idea Bridge got from his granddaughter.

Bridge also helped support an online high school math tutoring program, a teacher appreciation awards program, a school band and orchestra instrument refurbishing program among other efforts. He is a major contributor to the Friends of Renton Schools Foundation, has sponsored the annual Renton River Days festival, supported Communities in Schools of Renton, Vision House, The Salvation Army and food bank, the City of Renton Community Services Scholarship Program and youth programs with the police department and Swedish Hospital.

Bridge was named an Outstanding Citizen in 2008 as part of the City of Renton's Citizen of the Year program for community service.

He recently sold his car dealership to Mike O'Brien, another Washington auto dealer.

?Renton has been my adult home for many years," said Bridge in the release. "Being named grand marshal is a tremendous honor.?

Appearing after Bridge in the parade will be drill teams, cheer squads, Seattle Sounders FC Sound Wave, Seattle Seahawks Blue Thunder Drumline, classic and antique cars and many others.The festival runs in Liberty Park all weekend, July 27-29.

Institute practices that will avoid an injury repeating itself: If someone slipped on a wet floor, buy a sign that will caution future pedestrians. This won't deflect your current claim, but if two employees are injured in the same preventable manner, you might find yourself in a very precarious situation.

Show the claiming employee that you value him/her. Stay in touch while he/she is out of work, and encourage them to keep taking their medication or participating in whatever therapy they are using. It's always easier to deal with a non-hostile claimant.

Report the injury to your insurance company immediately and maintain open communication with them. Even though you are filling out forms, don't treat it as menial labor! French president's 'Mr. Normal' image hit by tweet

PARIS (AP) ? A feud involving the French president's live-in girlfriend, his former partner and his eldest son may have tarnished the new leader's carefully cultivated image as "Mr. Normal" ? credited with helping him win the spring election among a populace weary of his flashy predecessor, Nicolas Sarkozy.

Francois Hollande is expected to break his silence about the family feud that has riveted the media during a television interview Saturday ? tradition-steeped Bastille Day when a military parade and an interview by the chief of state about French policy at home and abroad is standard.

That he has agreed to answer questions about what's really on everyone's mind is a sign that in the Twitter era, even French leaders can't keep their private lives private. And that's the problem.

The presidential Elysee Palace on Friday confirmed reports that Hollande would talk about "tweetgate," as the media call the affair if ? as is almost certain ? he is asked about it during the TF1 broadcast.

A tweet last month, during legislative elections, by Hollande's companion Valerie Trierweiler in support of the political opponent of his ex-partner Segolene Royal caused a scandal. Royal ? the mother of the president's four children ? was defeated in her bid for a parliamentary seat.

The tweet was all it took to set the French political establishment aflame, and turn the president's image on its head.

Widely criticized as a vindictive move, the tweet went viral and dominated news shows.

"He campaigned for a clean break with Sarkozy, but it was a big mistake for Valerie, as it put his private life into public view," political communications expert Arnaud Mercier said in a telephone interview.

According to behind the scenes reports in the media, both Hollande and his children were furious, but all sides moved into a damage control operation and kept the feud under wraps.

Trierweiler has since kept a low profile. She was notably absent when Hollande visited with Queen Elizabeth II this week in London.

The Twitter account of Hollande's eldest son Thomas reads discreetly: "I don't count on tweeting for the moment."

A low profile was maintained until this week when the 27-year-old Thomas broke his silence, speaking out against his father's companion's actions to the newsweekly Le Point, published on Wednesday

"I knew that something could come from (Valerie) one day, but not such a big knock. It's mind blowing," he was quoted as saying.

"It upset me for my father. He really hates it when his private life is spoken about," he said. Then he added what many were already thinking: "It destroyed the "Normal" image that he'd built up."

The Elysee tried to diffuse the comments, saying on Friday that they were made during a "personal interview." Thomas Hollande has said some comments were taken out of context.

Despite those efforts to water down the remarks, "tweetgate" still dominates French media. Son Thomas' remarks are thought to have pushed his father into speaking out about a feud now set to overshadow the Bastille Day celebrations.

Since the Le Point article, Trierweiler has been spotted by her man's side in a clear show of unity. French media reported that Hollande allowed diners to take photographs during an intimate dinner with her at a swish Paris restaurant on Wednesday night. Trierweiler is also set to accompany him in engagements this weekend and next week.

"This is really serious for him now. That's why he's going on TV," Mercier said.

Sarkozy lost May's presidential election in large part because French voters grew tired of his very public private life, political pundits have said.

Conversely, a clear strength of Hollande, slightly portly and very discreet, was his Mr. Normal image.

Voters thought a Hollande presidency would spell the end of the Elysee family soap opera that saw Sarkozy divorce and take a new wife, haute-couture model turned singer, Carla Bruni, while president.

Commentators are now saying that history is repeating itself.

"He only beat Sarkozy by a small percentage, (owing to) his non-bling, private image ... Now he seems no different than Sarkozy, caught between two women," said Mercier.

The colorful amorous exploits of French leaders is nothing new.

For instance, Francois Mitterrand, French president from 1981 to 1995, had a secret daughter with a mistress.

But the French media, who have made it a point of honor to be protective of politicians' private lives, kept Mitterrand's exploits out of the papers.

In today's world, however, politicians' every public move is now under the scrutiny of smart phones and Twitter, and maintaining privacy is harder than ever ? even in France.

"It's for sure we're in an era where the private life of public people is more and more exposed with new media," said Diane-Monique Adjanonhoun, a political marketing strategist.

For Adjanonhoun, "tweetgate" signals the end of the era of politician's privacy.

"Presidents now are breaking with Mitterrand's time... We used to be a private country. But now, whether conscious or unconscious, France is no exception."

We dug into Microsoft's recently updated SkyDrive efforts in a review earlier this year, and it looks as if the company's still intent on improving things based on user feedback. The newest update to SkyDrive for Windows (version 16.4.6003.0710, for the number crunchers) includes quite a few under-the-hood improvements that are said to bolster "performance, reliability, and compatibility." But beyond that, you'll also see a much-requested status window; put simply, this guy gives users a glanceable view at whether or not their SkyDrive is in sync, and displays the time at which it was last updated. In the event that a sync is still ongoing, you'll also see the number of megabytes and files you have remaining to sync. Finally, Microsoft has refreshed the SkyDrive logo -- not surprisingly, there's a pinch of that Metro styling throughout.

S$483,000 raised to help those with autism find jobs

SINGAPORE: Some half-a-million dollars have been raised to help those with autism find jobs.

Over 800 people took part in the fundraiser, walking from Ang Mo Kio to Bishan Park and back.

Performances were also held as part of the event, attended by Acting Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports Chan Chun Sing.

The fundraiser is organised by Pathlight School and Singapore's Autism Resource Centre.

Proceeds will go to an Employability and Employment Centre which helps place youths and adults with autism in suitable jobs.

Gallbladder cancer is an infrequent neoplasia with noticeable geographical variations in its incidence around the world. In Chile, it is the main cause of death owing to cancer in women over 40 years old, with mortality rates up to 16.5 per 100,000 cases. The prognosis is poor with few therapeutic options; in advanced cases there is only a 10% survival at 5 years. Several studies mention the possible role of DNA methylation in gallbladder carcinogenesis. This epigenetic modification affects tumor suppressor genes involved in regulation pathways, cell cycle control, cell adhesion and extracellular matrix degradation, in a sequential and cumulative way. Determining DNA methylation patterns would allow them to be used as biomarkers for the early detection, diagnosis, prognosis and/or therapeutic selection in gallbladder cancer.

Solar storm bombarding Earth today

Space weather experts are keeping close watch for a solar storm expected to reach Earth Saturday, the fallout from a powerful solar flare earlier this week. ?

The solar storm originated from a massive solar flare on Thursday that included a powerful eruption on the sun, known as a coronal mass ejection. The eruption sent a wave of charged solar plasma toward Earth, which was expected to arrive sometime today, according to forecasts by NASA and the NOAA-run Space Weather Prediction Center in Colorado. The CME could amplify Earth's northern lights displays, some space weather officials have said.

Earlier forecasts predicted the CME would arrive at Earth between 5 a.m. and 9 a.m. EDT (0900 and 1300 GMT), with an error margin of plus or minus seven hours. A 1:06 p.m. EDT (1706 GMT) update from the Space Weather Prediction Center stated that the CME has not yet arrived.

"As the forerunner solar wind protons continue a steady increase, indicators that the CME is on the way, the wait continues for it to impact the Earth's magnetic field," center officials wrote in an update. "Look for that in the next few hours."

This weekend's solar storm originated from one of the most powerful sun flares to occur this year. The flare registered as an X1.4-class sun storm, one of the strongest flares the sun can unleash. It marked the sixth X-class solar flare of 2012.

The solar storm erupted from the giant sunspot AR1520, or Active Region 1520, which is actually a group of sunspots that at its peak may have stretched across 186,000 miles of the sun's surface, NASA scientists have said. [ Photos of Huge Sunspot AR1520 ]

An earlier center update released late Friday stated that the solar storm could trigger a level G2 geomagnetic storm on Earth, a moderate-level event capable of sparking auroras at latitudes as low as New York or Idaho, sometime after 9 a.m. EDT. Most northern lights displays, which occur when charged solar particle interact with Earth's upper atmosphere, are confined to high-latitude regions around the polar regions by the planet's magnetic field.

"Weekend auroras are likely," the space weather-tracking website Spaceweather.com wrote in an alert.

The Space Weather Prediction Center is tracking AR1520, as well as several other active spots on the sun, for signs of more activity.

"All eyes are on the solar wind data to note the expected passage on Saturday of a Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) from Thursday's solar event," center officials wrote in an update late Friday.

The solar storm is not expected to pose a major risk to satellites and spacecraft in orbit, or power systems on Earth, officials have said.

The sun is currently in the middle of an active phase in its 11-year sunspot cycle. The current cycle is known as Solar Cycle 24 and expected to peak in 2013.

Lawmakers furious over China-made Olympic uniform

WASHINGTON (AP) - Uniforms for U.S. Olympic athletes are American red, white and blue - but made in China. That has members of Congress fuming.

Republicans and Democrats railed Thursday about the U.S. Olympic Committee's decision to dress the U.S. team in Chinese manufactured berets, blazers and pants while the American textile industry struggles economically with many U.S. workers desperate for jobs.

"I am so upset. I think the Olympic committee should be ashamed of themselves. I think they should be embarrassed. I think they should take all the uniforms, put them in a big pile and burn them and start all over again," Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., told reporters at a Capitol Hill news conference on taxes.

House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi told reporters at her weekly news conference that she's proud of the nation's Olympic athletes, but "they should be wearing uniforms that are made in America."

House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, said simply of the USOC, "You'd think they'd know better."

In a tweet, U.S. track and field Olympian Nick Symmonds, who will compete in the 800-meter run at the London Games, wrote: "Our Ralph Lauren outfits for the Olympic opening ceremonies were made in China. So, um, thanks China."

Symmonds lives and trains in Oregon.

In a statement, the U.S. Olympic Committee defended the choice of designer Ralph Lauren for the clothing at the London Games, which begin later this month.

"Unlike most Olympic teams around the world, the U.S. Olympic Team is privately funded and we're grateful for the support of our sponsors," USOC spokesman Patrick Sandusky said in a statement. "We're proud of our partnership with Ralph Lauren, an iconic American company, and excited to watch America's finest athletes compete at the upcoming Games in London."

Ralph Lauren also is dressing the Olympic and Paralympic teams for the closing ceremony and providing casual clothes to be worn around the Olympic Village. Nike has made many of the competition uniforms for the U.S. and outfits for the medal stand.

On Twitter, Sandusky called the outrage over the made-in-China uniforms nonsense. The designer, Sandusky wrote, "financially supports our team. An American company that supports American athletes."

In fact, this is not the first time that Ralph Lauren has designed the Olympic uniforms. Yet that did little to quell the anger on Capitol Hill.

"It is not just a label, it's an economic solution," said Rep. Steve Israel, D-N.Y. "Today there are 600,000 vacant manufacturing jobs in this country and the Olympic committee is outsourcing the manufacturing of uniforms to China? That is not just outrageous, it's just plain dumb. It is self-defeating."

Israel urged the USOC to reverse the decision and ensure U.S. athletes wear uniforms that are made in America.

Sens. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, and Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., sent letters to Lawrence Probst III, chairman of the USOC, complaining about the made-in-China uniforms. Brown suggested that the USOC find a manufacturer with a facility in the United States, suggesting the Hugo Boss plant in Cleveland.

"There is no compelling reason why all of the uniforms cannot be made here on U.S. soil at the same price, at better quality," Gillibrand and Israel wrote.

This is hardly the first time patriotism has been discussed when it comes to Olympic clothing. The must-have souvenir of the 2002 Salt Lake Games was a fleece beret, something that athletes wore in the opening ceremony and prompted countless people to spend hours on lines waiting to purchase during those Olympics.

Those berets were made by Roots, a Canadian company that was the official U.S. team outfitter for that opening ceremony.
