Comet Lovejoy survives boiling brush with Sun, does victory dance

Comet Lovejoy's unlikely trip close to the sun's surface has given scientists a wealth of new information about our sun.

This was not a tale that should have had a happy ending. When Comet Lovejoy sped into the Sun?s corona in 2011, scientists did not expect the daredevil to survive. Astronomers had already tracked 2,000 similar comets making the same inadvisable trip. None had made it, all melting into the sun?s super-hot glow.

But Lovejoy did live ? and it is now telling scientists new tales about our sun.

"It's absolutely astounding," says Karl Battams, of the Naval Research Lab in Washington DC, in a press release.?"I did not think the comet's icy core was big enough to survive plunging through the several million degree solar corona for close to an hour, but Comet Lovejoy is still with us."

Not only did Lovejoy survive its sunny jaunt ? it began to dance. Or rather, its tail started to wiggle.

Now, in a new paper published in Science, scientists detail what they learned about our sun as they watched the wily comet?s veritable suicide mission.

Comet Lovejoy, known to scientists as C/2011 W3, passed within just 87,000 miles of the sun?s surface for two days in December 2011. When it did, the comet began to evaporate in the sun?s scorch, leaving behind a tail-like trail of material that scientists could observe from multiple perspectives by using five different spacecraft. As the comet?s tail began to wiggle in a seeming victory dance, the scientists fed data from their multiple perspectives on the show into a computer that created a magnetohydrodynamic model of the sun's atmosphere.

Scientists also found the tail?s flits could suggest that the comet was surrounded by plasma waves running through the corona, or that the tail was bouncing on huge magnetic loops in the sun's atmosphere, raising new questions about sun?s atmosphere.

"This is all new," said Battams, in a press release. The new information ?is giving us our first look at comets traveling through the sun's atmosphere. How the two interact is cutting-edge research."

Comet Lovejoy was the discovery of amateur Australian astronomer Terry Lovejoy in December 2011. It belongs to what is known as the Kreutz family of sun-grazing comets, likely all pieces of a single giant comet that splintered apart in 1106 AD. It is thought to be at least 10 times larger than its other family members, and scientists are now pushing that estimate upwards, as only a comet with an unusually large ice core could have come as stunningly near to the sun and survive.

Scientists are unsure how long Lovejoy will exist after this stressful event, and SOHO and NASA's twin STEREO probes are continuing to monitor the comet as it swishes away from the sun

"There is still a possibility that Comet Lovejoy will start to fragment," said Battams, in a press release. "It's been through a tremendously traumatic event; structurally, it could be extremely weak. On the other hand, it could hold itself together and disappear back into the recesses of the solar system."

Thank you for your service, the not-so-little comet that could.

Director of National Intelligence declassifies PRISM info to clear up 'inaccuracies'

After details of a government program called PRISM with alleged hooks into the servers of major internet companies became public this week, Director of National Intelligence James Clapper decided it was necessary to reveal even more information. According to his statement, clearing up the "significant misimpressions" and "inaccuracies" requires the release of further classified info, included in a fact sheet listed after the break. So what is PRISM, according to the "Facts on Collection of Information Pursuant to Section 702"?

It is an internal government computer system used to facilitate the government's statutorily authorized collection of foreign intelligence information from electronic communication service providers under court supervision...This authority was created by the Congress and has been widely known and publicly discussed since its inception in 2008.

In short, Section 702 facilitates the targeted acquisition of foreign intelligence information concerning foreign targets located outside the United States under court oversight. Service providers supply information to the Government when they are lawfully required to do so.

The document claims PRISM is not an "undisclosed collection or data mining program." The above passages seemingly align with statements (including one today from Yahoo) from the companies listed claiming that they only respond to inquiries when required to by law. It goes on to offer some details on the process used to identify foreign targets ("Section 702 cannot be used to intentionally target any U.S. citizen, or any other U.S. person, or to intentionally target any person known to be in the United States") and the oversight involved. Specifically mentioned is the involvement of the Executive, Legislative and Judicial branches of the federal government. Additionally, another report from The Guardian exposes more internal documents that contradict the theory that PRISM involves access to "cable intercepts," although that can occur under a different process.

(AP) ? Three years ago she crossed the Atlantic with a broken heart. Now Sweden's "party princess" returns from New York to Stockholm to tie the knot with her new, British-American love.

On Saturday, Princess Madeleine ? the Duchess of Halsingland and Gastrikland ? will wed New York banker Christopher O'Neill in the Swedish capital, bringing together European royals and top New York socialites for a grand celebration.

Madeleine, 30, is the youngest of King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia's three children and fourth in line to the throne. She became known as Sweden's party princess in her early 20s, when she was frequently spotted at Stockholm's high-end nightclubs, and has attracted widespread attention for her stylish clothes and glamorous lifestyle.

But her life hasn't always been a fairytale. In 2010, Madeleine fled to New York after breaking off her first engagement to Swedish attorney Jonas Bergstrom amid media reports that he had cheated on her. The couple had been together for eight years and had made a big announcement of their engagement in August the year before.

Since then, Madeleine has lived in New York, working for the nonprofit World Childhood Foundation, founded by her mother.

Two years ago, she met O'Neill, now 38, who works as a partner and head of research at Noster Capital.

This time around the princess has kept a lower profile, announcing their engagement through a video on the Royal Court's website.

Jenny Alexandersson, the royal reporter at Swedish tabloid Aftonbladet, says the breakup with Bergstrom had been "really, really hard" for Madeleine.

"She was really sad, and I think she felt a bit humiliated, "Alexandersson told The Associated Press." So, this time I really hope it's a big love. They look really, really happy together so I'm crossing my fingers for them."

The Royal Court on Friday said Madeleine's wedding dress has been made by Italian designer Valentino Garavani. Alexandersson said she expects a glamorous ceremony, adding that O'Neill has invited many friends from his party days among the New York glitterati.

The Royal Court said guests include the U.K.'s Earl and Countess of Wessex, Prince Edward and Sophie, Princess Takamado of Japan and princes and princesses from Norway, Denmark, Greece, Luxembourg and Monaco.

Other well-known invites include the CEO of fashion retailer H&M, Karl-Johan Persson, golfer Jesper Parnevik, Roxette singer Marie Fredriksson, Broadway's "Phantom of the Opera" star Peter Joback and Colombian billionaire Alejandro Santo Domingo.

Although Madeleine's wedding will be a lavish affair, it won't compare to her sister Crown Princess Victoria's marriage to her personal trainer Daniel Westling in 2010, when Stockholm was transformed into one giant party for citizens and royals alike.

Officials say that no side events for the general public have been arranged this time, but Swedes can watch the royal couple's meander through the capital in a horse and carriage after the wedding ceremony in the Royal Chapel. Then, the couple will sail to the royal residence and UNESCO World Heritage site Drottningholm Palace, 10 kilometers (6 miles) west of the city center, for a private wedding reception with an estimated 500 guests.

O'Neill was born into a wealthy family. His late father, Paul O'Neill, set up the European head office of Oppenheimer & Co in London in the 1960s and his mother, Eva Maria O'Neill, is involved in several charities. He studied at a boarding school in St. Gallen, Switzerland, and holds a bachelor's degree in international relations from Boston University and a master's degree from Columbia Business School in New York.

O'Neill, who holds dual American and British citizenship, has declined a royal rank in Sweden, which would have required him to become a Swedish citizen. He has chosen to continue working and the newlyweds are expected to move back to the United States.

The Swedish royal family has only ceremonial duties, such as attending award ceremonies, promoting Swedish businesses abroad and supporting charities. As the head of state, the king also receives foreign dignitaries on formal visits to Sweden.

Screenshots from eBay-bought Windows Phone hint at notification center, interface tweaks

Alleged screenshots from eBaybought Windows Phone tease notification center, interface tweaks

You know how it goes, you buy a phone on eBay, and it comes with a developer / pre-release version of a major mobile OS. Well, if these images are to be believed, that's at least what happened to one bargain-hunting Windows Phone fan. The screenshots -- said to be taken from a Nokia 920 -- show Windows Phone 8, but with a few new tweaks and features. Most notable, will likely be the notifications, but other tidbits include App list ordering based on frequency of use, week view in the calendar and the option to kill apps from the multitask screen. The phone reports a build number of: 12084.WPMAIN(wpbldlab).20130509-1407 leading some to infer that this version could have been compiled sometime in May. A tease of something to come? As always, hard to tell, but expect the price of second-hand 920s to bump up a little, for the next few weeks at least.

Amid safety fears, US Navy jets train on Iwo Jima

IOTO, Japan (AP) ? Iwo Jima is a training site like no other. The rugged volcanic crag was one of the most iconic battlegrounds of World War II, and is so isolated and barren it has almost never been inhabited by anyone other than military troops. But from the perspective of U.S. Navy fighter pilots who regularly train on the island's one functioning airstrip, it is unique in another way.

If a plane finds itself in serious trouble and for some reason that lone airstrip on the island isn't viable, the only alternative is to eject and ditch in the Pacific. It's a problem that the U.S. Navy, which is now conducting training on the island to prepare pilots for deployment to the USS George Washington aircraft carrier, has been trying to fix for nearly 25 years.

But, so far, Japan has failed to find a more suitable site.

Briefing reporters on the tiny island Friday, Capt. Dennis Mikeska, the assistant chief of staff for operations, planning and operations for the U.S. Naval Forces, Japan, said Iwo Jima is the only place in the world where the Navy conducts crucial carrier landing practice without an emergency "divert" ? an alternate location where a plane can go in an emergency.

He said the Navy hasn't lost a plane on Iwo Jima yet, but added, "That's not to say there haven't been any close calls."

Mikeska was quick to note that although the site is not so critically dangerous as to be unusable, it does not meet Navy safety standards and must be replaced as soon as possible.

Japan is responsible for providing locations for all U.S. bases within Japanese territory that both countries agree are necessary. The Navy's plea has run up against the classic dilemma that faces all U.S. forces in Japan. Though the Japanese government is one of Washington's staunchest and most reliable allies, it is virtually impossible to find a city, town or village that will quietly accept having U.S. troops based near it.

The not-in-my-backyard problem is most intense on the island of Okinawa, where about half of the 50,000 U.S. troops in Japan are based. Plans to simply deploy the Marine Corps' new transport aircraft, the MV-22 Osprey, have sent tens of thousands of Okinawans to the streets in protest.

This week, the mere suggestion by the mayor of Japan's second-largest city that the U.S. should use a small suburban airfield there was met with an immediate outcry, and has become a national debate.

For the Japanese leadership ? who are rarely willing to risk such controversy ? Iwo Jima is the perfect place to put the noisy U.S. fighters.

Now officially called Ioto in Japan, the island is inhabited full time only by a few hundred Japanese troops. It is about 750 miles (1,200 kilometers) south of Naval Air Facility Atsugi, the base on Japan's main island where the George Washington aircraft carrier's air wing ? the units that train on Iwo Jima ? is stationed when not at sea.

Local anger over the noise and dangers of a crash are what drove the wing to Iwo Jima to begin with.

With little other choice, the Navy has been using the Iwo Jima facility for carrier landing practice since 1989, when the two governments agreed to move such operations there "on an interim basis" in response to the noise complaints, and costly lawsuits, from Atsugi residents.

Carrier-based fighter pilots need to train intensely and are required to take qualification tests before deploying to sea. The strip on Iwo Jima has a mock-up of an aircraft carrier's deck. Veteran pilots stand nearby as the fighters approach, both to guide them in and to grade each landing.

Iwo Jima has its advantages. Because there is no local population to worry about, fighters can fly at low altitudes and at all hours of the night. But according to the Navy, the nearest place a pilot can "divert," or make an emergency landing, is 600 miles (960 kilometers) away, or about six times farther than the 100 miles (160 kilometers) that is considered safe.

"We need a special waiver every time we train out there," said Jon Nylander, a spokesman for the U.S. Navy in Japan. "Moving it is a high priority for us."

Tokyo has acknowledged Iwo Jima is only a temporary solution.

Japan has suggested the Iwo Jima flight training be conducted on Mageshima, an island in Japan's southwest where Tokyo plans to build a military base to bolster its southern defenses and its preparedness for natural disasters. Mageshima was officially named a candidate in 2004 in a meeting between the U.S. and Japanese foreign and defense ministers.

Mageshima would provide access to alternative landing sites, and would also be closer to the home base of the air wing when it moves to Iwakuni, about 250 miles (400 kilometers) away. That move was scheduled for 2014, but has also stalled.

No progress has been announced on moving to that island, however.

Mikeska said Mageshima is still officially a candidate site, but no firm plans have been agreed upon.

The Most Terrifying Anti Drunk Driving Stunt You'll Ever See

Sometimes the best way to drive a point home is pure, abject terror. And that's the approach Leo Burnett London used in this ad that shows a rather extreme way to discourage drinking and driving.

Unsuspecting bathroom patrons at a British pub were shocked to see the face of a woman come smashing through the mirror?complete with blood?as if she'd just gone through the windshield of a car on the other side of the wall. In reality it was just a mannequin, and the victims of this PSA were most likely actors, but the effect is no less unsettling. To the point where I'm pretty sure I'd never leave my house again had I experienced this. Mission accomplished. [Creativity Online via Taxi]

Was Jesse Eisenberg really a 'jerk' in interview?

Movies

Oh, Mila Kunis, what have you wrought? Back in March, one of the stars of "Oz the Great and Powerful" had a delightful, off-the-cuff interview at a press junket with a rookie, starstruck BBC Radio 1 interviewer -- and it went viral. But a new press junket interview has recently surfaced between Jesse Eisenberg and an interviewer named Romina Puga, and the results are considerably more schticky and cloying.

Puga does a web series for Univision called "Say My Name," and part of her gimmick is that her interview subject says her name for the camera. Not deep, but all right. The thing is, not every interviewee is happy to play along and Eisenberg -- who sat down with her to promote his film "Now You See It" was a little less than cooperative.

In the self-edited video of the exchange (in which interactions have clearly been cut down and re-ordered), Eisenberg alternates between appearing tolerant, irritated and flirty -- though he's clearly trying to stay somewhat professional despite being asked to laugh at a "separated finger" magic trick, then show off a card trick for an interviewer who may or may not have actually written questions on her hand. At no point are they actually discussing the movie (though arguably it is about magicians, so card tricks make some sense).

In the course of their discussion, Eisenberg calls her the "Carrot Top of interviewers," noting that she relies on props. She doesn't take kindly to it. "OK, I'm going to cry now," she says with a smile on her face.

"No, don't cry now, cry after the interview is over. 'Cause otherwise it'll look like I'm responsible," he says.

"Well, you are."

Things go downhill from there; she saves the "say my name" query for the very end, and when he's reluctant to do more than just literally speak "Romina," she gives him some direction: "You're trying to find me in a crowded place."

"Romina."

"I would never hear that."

"The thing is, I didn't really want to find you, I was hoping to stay alone."

Which leads to this natural climax, wherein Puga says -- smile still intact -- "You're such a jerk."

So who was the real jerk -- Eisenberg, for not playing along, or Puga, for insisting that he be quirky on command? Puga clearly feels offended; as she wrote on her Tumblr blog, "I was just humiliated by Jesse Eisenberg," and calls the five-minute interview (less than three minutes make it to the video) "self-esteem butchering." Yet even after the interview was done she wasn't so humiliated that she had to flee the premises, and sought out Eisenberg for a little chat: "I peaked (sic) around the curtain to ask Jesse about his neighborhood in New York ... and he immediately says, 'You're still here?'"

"I finally walked away," she wrote.

Undoubtedly, all parties were relieved. Check out the video for the edited interview.
